This is a fabulous fossil cystoid. It is an excellent Pleurocystites squamosus from the Ordovician of Ontario, Canada. First, it must be stated that this cystoid is fully natural and 100% intact as fossilized - there is no repair, restoration, or missing parts whatsoever (the right arm was missing when the animal died and was fossilized as such!) This distinct cystoid is beautifully preserved and retains its classic sperm-like shape. Both long, uniserial arms and curved stem are intact, and the stem is also well preserved. The dark, cream-colored fossil contrasts nicely with the blue-grey matrix. The ancient echinoderm is wonderfully showcased on the squared plate of limestone that also contains some other fossils. This is a very collectible, natural example of this rare Ordovician echinoderm. (Again, the cystoid is 100% intact, it was missing an arm tip when it died.)
