This is a fabulous stromatolite specimen from the Precambrian of Australia. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. Pilbaria perplexa is believed to have grown in a shallow marine lagoon environment with rare periods of emergence. It is also believed that this stromatolite is 2 billion years old! This striking mass has been highly polished on one side for optimal display. The unique cellular pattern of the stromatolite is beautifully showcased, and the different colorful shades of the mineral replacement are quite striking. This is a very collectible and displayable example of this very uncommon stromatolite from Down Under.
