Here is a very uncommon fossil arthropod. This is a large Macropenaeus shrimp from the Cretaceous of Lebanon. Due to political unrest, specimens from this site are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. This genus of shrimp should not be confused with the smaller, much more common Carpopenaeus callirostris. The shrimp is quite robust and exhibits fine detail - the head, segmented carapace, and tail are clearly defined. The long, slender antennae, legs, and mandibles are nicely displayed The natural color of the fossil contrasts wonderfully with the light-colored matrix. This is a nice, large specimen of an unusual fossil shrimp from Lebanon.
