This is a fossil with a cool story to tell. It is a Petoskey Stone from the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Petoskey stones were formed as a result of glaciation, in which sheets of ice plucked stones (in this case fossilized coral) from the bedrock, grinding off their rough edges and depositing them miles away.The name comes from an Ottawa Indian Chief, Chief Pet-O-Sega. In 1965, the Petoskey Stone was named the State Stone of Michigan. This specimen is almost three inches across and has great color and detail preserved. The back side of the stone also displays well. This is a classic fossil with a unique story behind it - what a beautiful conversation piece!
