Here is a very rare and collectible insect fossil. This is a large fossil beetle, Cybister sp., preserved in tar from the Pleistocene ''La Brea Tar Pits'' of California. This location has been closed to collecting for many years. The distinct beetle is very well preserved in a 3-dimensional fashion. The detail is excellent - the reticulation of the wing covers is easily seen. The dark insect contrasts nicely with the surface of the tar matrix. There is also a second smaller, but extremely detailed beetle preserved on the plate - we have no idea what species this beetle is! This is a very rare association of two different fossil insects from a classic fossil site - what a conversation piece!
