This is a striking example of Gogia spiralis from the Wheeler Shale of Utah. This primitive echinoderm used to be known as an eocrinoid, but has now been re-classified as a cystoid. This large specimen is complete and exhibits wonderful detail. The elongate, multi-plated, sac-like holdfast is intact and very distinct. The cystoid has a large-plated, nodose calyx that is quite evident, and twisted, spiraled arms that are beautifully showcased in a splayed position. The fossil has excellent color and contrast and is nicely displayed on the squared plate of shale. This is a very collectible example of this extinct echinoderm from Utah.
