Here is an extremely aesthetic fossil starfish. This is Urasterella asperula from the Devonian of Germany. Since the quarries in this area have closed, the only way to obtain specimens from this site is through the dispersal of old collections. This specimen was recently acquired from an old German collection. This species may get larger, but it would be hard to imagine a specimen any prettier than this one. This excellent starfish exhibits incredible detail. All five arms are complete and beautifully displayed. The plate structure of the echinoderm is clearly defined and even the tube feet of the animal can be seen. The preservation is so spectacular that the starfish appears to be "floating" across the large (4.7" X 5.6") rectangular plate of roofing slate. This is an extraordinary fossil starfish from a world-renowned site.
