Here is a spectacular fossil crab. This is large Cancer arancana from the Oligocene of Chile. This crab was found in a very hard, dense concretion. Half of the concretion has been painstakingly removed to reveal this wonderful fossil. Preparation of a specimen like this is quite laborious, to say the least. The crab is 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits fine detail. The carapace and BOTH claws of the crab are beautifully displayed. Even some of the legs are evident. The fossil has good color and contrast. It is very inflated and well-centered in the concretion. This is an excellent specimen of this fossil crab from South America.
